PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce xanthene which is industrially useful as a pharmaceutical intermediate, by a convenient process of reducing with a borohydride compound such as hydrogen sodium borohydride, under the presence of an acid compound, with high yield and high selectivity.SOLUTION: Provided is a process for producing xanthene by reducing xanthone with a borohydride compound such as sodium borohydride, potassium borohydride or the like, or a boron-based reducer of a borane-based complex compound, under the presence of a Lewis acid such as chlorotrimethyl silane or the like or a Broensted acid such as sulfuric acid or the like.SELECTED DRAWING: None |
