The engine has two combustion chambers with two pistons movably arranged in two cylinders, respectively, where a fuel/air mixture is combustible in the chambers. A gas changing inlet valve and a gas changing exhaust valve are provided in each cylinder for exchanging gas. One of the chambers is provided for an operating point for a small load, and the other chamber is provided for an operating point for a large load. The former chamber exhibits large compression ratio than the latter chamber, and the cylinders are operated simultaneously or independently.
