<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for preventing overheat of a catalyst that can optimize timing of a catalyst overheat-preventing control. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus for preventing overheat of the catalyst includes a temperature obtaining device 20 that estimates a convergence temperature T1 of the catalyst 10 provided in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine and a current temperature T2, an increment calculation device 22, a comparison device 23, a correction device 24, and an increment determining device 26, which are used to execute OT increase when the convergence temperature T1 and current temperature T2 estimated by the temperature obtaining device 20 are equal to or higher than an OT determination temperature T3, and a current temperature correction device 27 that corrects the current temperature T2 to the OT determination temperature T3 when the current temperature T2 is equal to or higher than the OT determination temperature T3 and the convergence temperature T1 is equal to the OT determination temperature T3.
