<p>Disclosed is a method for producing a water absorbent resin, wherein said method produces the water absorbent resin by means of a reversed-phase suspension polymerisation method and wherein odours originating from raw material components, particularly petroleum hydrocarbon dispersion mediums, have been reduced. Also disclosed is the water absorbent resin obtained by means of the method. Specifically, the disclosed method carries out reversed-phase suspension polymerisation on water soluble ethyleny unsaturated monomers in a petroleum hydrocarbon dispersion medium and using a surfactant. By dispersing a water soluble ethyleny unsaturated monomer solution into the dispersion medium at a prescribed insertion speed the method produces a water absorbent resin wherein odours have been reduced. Also disclosed is the water absorbent resin obtained by means of the disclosed method.</p>
