Provided is a negative pole material for a lithium ion secondary battery, the negative pole material comprising a carbon material having, as determined by X-ray diffraction, an average planar spacing (d002) of 0.335 nm to 0.340 nm, a volume average grain size (50% D) of 1 µm to 40 µm, and a maximum grain size (Dmax) of 74 µm or less and, as determined by differential thermal analysis in an air current, at least two exothermic peaks within a temperature range of 300°C to 1000°C.
