<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive control method for a printing system that can prevent a start of print processing from being delayed by time required for cleaning processing. <P>SOLUTION: When a computer 2 connected to a label printer 3 activates application software 4, before the application software 4 provides the label printer 3 with a print instruction, the label printer 3 is inquired about necessity for the cleaning processing for a print head 321. The label printer 3 starts the cleaning processing when time elapsed from the previous cleaning processing to time when the inquiry is received is equal to or greater than predetermined time requiring next cleaning processing.
