<p>An autonomous underwater vehicle is described comprising a body portion, a processing device and a propulsion device mounted within the body portion, and sensor mounted on or within in the body portion. The autonomous underwater vehicle includes buoyancy control means configured to enable adjustment of the position of the vehicle during operation. The buoyancy control is achieved through adjustment of the mass or volume of the vehicle in response to signals from the sensor. A method of operating an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) is also described.
