Provided is a polymer electrolyte for obtaining a polymer electrolyte film that can be used to obtain a fuel cell with good power-generating performance and long-term stability. The polymer electrolyte in the present invention is characterized by containing a polyarylene compound that has one or more types of groups selected from between a group represented by formula (1) and a group represented by formula (2). Formula (1): -Y01-A1-B1 (In formula (1), A1 represents a divalent aromatic group having a six-membered ring containing one or more types of atoms selected from a group consisting of nitrogen and sulfur atoms. Y01 represents a direct bond or the divalent group. B1 represents a C1-20 alkyl group, or the like, which may have a hydrogen atom, a halogen group or a substituent.)
