<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing dvice, along with a method of controlling preparation operation, which can suppress deterioration of print throughput by securing printing capability performed during printing, or efficiently performing preparation operation for inspection. <P>SOLUTION: A carriage 32, which stops at a finish position PTn at a full side after finishing this (N-time) pass, operates a paper feed waiting expected time Tw until moving of the next (N+1 time) pass starts. It is determined whether the paper feed waiting expected time Tw exceeds flashing requirement condition time Tfc being waiting time required for flashing. When Tw>Tfc is satisfied, the carriage 32 is immediately caused to start moving to a flashing position FP without waiting for the time Tfc. Meanwhile, when Tw>Tfc is not satisfied, the carriage is not caused to move to the flashing position FP before the time Tfc has passed.
