A system, method and non-transitory computer-readable storage medium are disclosed for processing coupons. A system configured to practice the method transmits an advertisement to a mobile device of a user after the user registers to receive advertisements, wherein the advertisement is associated with an identification card of the user and a coupon, activates the coupon based on an acceptance via a user interaction with the mobile device, other than a telephone call, to yield an activated coupon, receives an indication at a point of sale device of a purchase using the identification card, wherein the mobile device is different from the point of sale device, and applies a discount to the purchase according to the activated coupon. Thus, a user can redeem the coupon by simply purchasing using the identification card without presenting a separate physical coupon. The coupon can be applied in substantially real time or after the transaction. |
