In order to ensure very reliably that any component produced therefrom has high strength values and an increased breaking elongation, the steel according to the invention contains (in % by weight) C: 0.15 - 0.40 %, Mn: 1.0 - 2.0 %, Al: 0.2 - 1.6 %, Si: 0 - 1.4 %, sum of the Si und Al contents: 0.25 - 1.6 %, P: 0 - 0.10 %, S: 0 - 0.03 %, Cr: 0 - 0.5 %, Mo: 0 - 1.0 %, N : 0 - 0.01 %, Ni: 0 - 2.0 %, Nb: 0.012 - 0.04 %, Ti: 0 - 0.40 %, B: 0.0010 - 0.0050 %, Ca: 0 - 0.0050 %, the rest being iron and inevitable impurities. The steel component obtained in this way is then cooled quickly, so that at least in the region of the high-strength steel the steel component obtained after the cooling has a structure consisting of martensite, austenite and up to 20 % by area of ferrite.
