<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a permanent magnet embedded rotor capable of reducing an eddy current loss without reducing torque, and to provide a rotary electric machine incorporating the same. <P>SOLUTION: The permanent magnet embedded rotor 15 has a first permanent magnet 17 embedded in the proximity of an outer peripheral surface 16b of a rotor core 16 to extend in a direction perpendicular to the d axis, has a second permanent magnet 18 embedded so as to extend along the q axis, and has a second gap 22 formed in the rotor core 16 apart from the first permanent magnet 17 in the direction of the q axis. The second gap 22 has an outer peripheral side formation surface 22a located in the proximity of the outermost circumferential surface of the rotor core 16, and an inner peripheral side end part Y located in the proximity of the innermost peripheral surface of the rotor core 16.
