The engine i.e. double-piston engine (1), has a crankcase (4) retaining a crankshaft (8), and an oil sump (9) connected with the crankcase and exhaust gas guiding devices. The oil sump toward a crankshaft axis (5) is shorter than the crankcase toward the crankshaft axis. The guiding devices are arranged in a free space below the crankcase. A cooling water pipe is arranged in a region of a wall of the oil sump adjacent to the exhaust gas guiding devices. The guiding devices are designed as a supercharger (10), a waste gas catalyst (11) and a collecting pipe (17).
