PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting a load on the front of a cutter, which enable the load on the front of the cutter to be inexpensively and accurately detected in a space-saving manner, and an excavator. SOLUTION: This load detecting device comprises a first displacement detecting means (20) for detecting the first thrust-direction displacement of a center shaft (4) or a shaft supporting member (6) with respect to a frame (1), and a second displacement detecting means (22) for detecting the second thrust-direction displacement of the center shaft (4) with respect to the shaft supporting member (6). Additionally, the load detecting device is also equipped with a control means (32) for controlling the propulsion speed of a propelling means (10) depending on the first and second displacements.
