The level of formaldehyde in a textile is reduced by treating it with 3-oxobutan amide or an N-alkyl derivative thereof. The derivative is mono- or di-substituted with 1-3C alkyl groups. The preferred process involves impregnating a textile with an aqueous solution of a poly(hydroxyorgano) phosphonium compound, drying, curing with ammonia, oxidising, washing, impregnating with the acetoacetic acid amide (derivative) and drying. Preferably the textile comprises cellulosic fibres and the treatment composition includes a softener. The treated fabric is used to produce clothing. The formaldehyde could result from treatment with a flame retardant.
