A suspended particle device which enables light control without requiring any complicated switching circuit to be formed on a substrate is realized. A suspension (11) containing charged particles (9) and a disperse medium (10) is filled between an A-substrate (1) and a B-substrate (2), and first and second electrodes (3,4) are formed on the A-substrate (1). A DC voltage is applied across the first and second electrodes (3,4) to localize the charged particles (9) on the second electrode side (4). Subsequently, an AC voltage is applied across the first and second electrodes (3,4) to orient, while maintaining the localised state of the charged particles (9), the charged particles (9) along a direction of an electric field. Light transmittance is lower in an area where the charged particles (9) are present than in an area where no charged particles (9) are present, whereas, in the area where the charged particles (9) are present, the light transmittance can be controlled by adjusting the AC voltage. Thus, in the suspended particle device, the amount of light transmitted through a prescribed area can be controlled.
