The ARINC-629 digital communication system, used in aircraft, has previously been implemented on an electrical bus and on a fibre optic bus. In the electrical implementation a Serial Interface Module (SIM) of a LRU converted digital data into analogue voltage doublets for transmission on the bus. In the optical implementation a Fibre Optic SIM (FOSIM) replaced the SIM and converted input digital signals directly to optical pulses for transmission on the optical bus. The present invention is a media convertor to be connected between a conventional electrical SIM and the optical bus. The media converter converts voltage doublets from the SIM to positive logic electrical pulses, such as Manchester II bi-phase codes. These unipolar electrical pulses are input to a laser driver. The media converter is configured for bidirectional communication and preferably includes a DC-coupled receiver. The invention makes possible ARINC 629 optical communication using a conventional electrical SIM and obviates replacement with a FOSIM.
