PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a semiconductor optical element that further improves the characteristics by a structure of reducing a parasitic capacitance in a semiconductor optical element having an embedded heterostructure; an optical transmission module; an optical transmission and reception module; and an optical transmission apparatus.

SOLUTION: A semiconductor optical element includes a modulator for modulating light incident along an emitting direction and emitting the light. The modulator includes a mesa stripe structure, containing an active layer, which is elongated along the emitting direction and an embedded layer which is arranged next to both sides of the mesa stripe structure. The distance between a lower surface of the embedded layer and a lower surface of the active layer is 20% or more of the distance between the lower surface and an upper surface of the embedded layer.
