A protocol is described in which content, such as popular video files, are cached by an operator/service provider. When a user requests access to the content, the file can be provided from the cache, rather than retrieving the file from the original source of the file. The protocol enables the current status of the file to be obtained from the original source of the file, to ensure that content is not provided to the end user if that is inappropriate.
