There is provided a projection-type image display apparatus which is capable of solving the problem in which the reduction ratio of speckles is small. Light source 1 emits a light beam that is modulated according to a video signal. Projector 7 projects the light beam emitted from light source 1 to display an image. Changer 8 changes a polarized state of the light beam emitted from the light source 1 to projector 7 or changes a polarized state of the light beam projected by the projector 7. Controller 5 repeatedly selects a plurality of predetermined particular polarized states according to a predetermined sequence. Controller 5 switches the polarized state changed by the changer 8 to the selected particular polarized states.
