Optical reader systems (10) and methods for determining the presence and/or amount of analytes in a fluid sample are described. The optical reader (10) for performing a diagnostic test on a test sample comprises a cassette receiving member (16) configured to receive at least one cassette (15) comprising at least one lateral flow strip with a test sample received thereon, an excitation member (24) positioned to direct excitation energy towards the at least one cassette (15) when the at least one cassette (15) is received by the cassette receiving member (16), and an imaging system (26) configured to capture an image of a viewing area, the viewing area comprising at least a portion of the at least one cassette (15). The optical reader (10) further comprises a flashlamp as the excitation member (24), said flashlamp is configured to emit a single flash for each diagnostic test and/or the optical reader (10) further comprises a CMOS sensor as the imaging system (26).
