The engine (1) has a heating circuit (9) provided in a coolant-operating heating part (11). An automatic steering valve (7) comprises a temperature-reactive element (7a) subjected with coolant. A return line (6) is connected either with a supply line (4) or separated from the supply line. An electrical actuatable shut-off element (12) is arranged upstream to the steering valve and in a feed line (10) of the heating circuit. The electrical actuatable shut-off element is controlled by an engine controller (13) based on coolant temperature. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a liquid-cooled combustion engine.
