The method involves generating signals by light sources (1) i.e. LEDs, on a surface (40) with a distance (D) to be measured, and detecting the signals from receivers (10, 20). The signals are generated by the sources or the signals received from the receivers, where the received signals are processed in order to compensate interference effects. One of the light sources or transmitter is arranged on a platform (30), where the transmitter radiates light signals with a transmitter directivity pattern (5) toward a surface of an object with the distance to be measured. An independent claim is also included for a device for measuring a non-contact distance.
