A light concentrator for a photovoltaic system comprises a plastics disk (203) having a reflective coating which is made to attain a concave configuration without the use of a mould or former by supporting it at its periphery and applying mechanical force to its central region. The disk may have a central aperture. Force may be applied by means of a ring (305) and a screw (306) which extends though the aperture to pull the disk to the desired configuration. The disk may be snapped into position within a peripheral support (304). The concave configuration may then be maintained without the continuous application of force. Heat may be applied during the configuration-forming operation. An auxiliary reflector may direct concentrated light back thorough the central aperture to a photovoltaic cell. The radial cross-section of the undetected disk may be made non-uniform to promote deflection to the desired configuration. A steerable array of concentrators may be used. |
