A mechanical seal (10) is disclosed having a rotatable sealing face (22) and a stationary sealing face (24) that are in opposed relation and arranged to be urged into contact to form a seal. One of the sealing faces (24) is mounted on a support assembly (31, 32, 36, 40) that includes a biasing device (36) operative to move that sealing face (24) into contact with the other sealing face (22). In one form, the biasing device (36) comprises one or more resilient members. The biasing device (36) may apply a uniform force about the sealing face and may form part of a fluid barrier of the seal.
