<p>A system and method for monitoring for structural defects or impacts in or on structures on the basis of acoustic emission comprises a plurality of sensors 202 acoustically coupled to the monitored structure. Each sensor is connected to a network bus system via a preamplifier 204 which passes the sensor signal from the detected acoustic emission to a Remote Data Concentrator (RDC) 206 for collation for further analysis. The RDC acts as a master time source for the system. The system can be used to determine the location of detected acoustic emissions in the monitored structure, which may be an aircraft structure, and so allow the structural health or integrity of the structure to be assessed. A method for synchronising a local time of devices attached to a network comprises sending a synchronisation timing signal and a master time value defining the time the synchronisation signal was sent, receiving the synchronisation signal and master value at a device and comparing the master value with a local time value to calculate an offset between the two. The offset value is used to adjust the local time of the device to synchronise with the master time.</p> |
