347,894. Making paper bags. COTY, T. E. and COTY, A. C., Watertown, New York, U.S.A. May 9, 1930, No. 14316. [Class 94 (ii).] In making paper bags from tubular blanks by closing one end of the blank and thereafter closing the other, the bag is turned round end for end between the closing operations whilst retaining at all times mechanical engagement with the reversing means which operate positively and automatically. Tubular blanks B<1>, picked one by one from a pile by oscillating fingers b, b<1>, are fed by a rotating segment b2 and arm B<3> through feed rollers C<1>, c to co-operating rollers C<2>, C<7>, one of which carries a pin c<1> adapted to pick up the flap of the thumb tag of the blank while a cam-operated lever c<2> on the other roller C<2> grips the lower flap to draw the blank round the roller, a finger C<6> engaging the upper flap to open out the blank. Feed rollers C<9> .. C<11> pass the blank to tapes L which co-operate with the edges of discs D constituting a creasing cylinder and carrying fixed and adjustable pads D2, D<3> against which creasing blades K<2>, K<1> operate. A pad e on a roller E<1> applies gum as shown in Fig. 2a. Tapes L<1> now act in conjunction with the tapes L to convey the creased blank around a folding cylinder F. The folding cylinder comprises two sets of cam-operated folding arms F3, F<4>, the arm F<3> folding down the front flap b<3>, Fig. 2a, and pressing it until the arm F4 folds down the rear flap b4 on to it. Rollers l<1> . . l<4> feed the bag on to a reversing cylinder G. This cylinder comprises two spaced discs G<1> connected by bars g<10>, Fig. 3, and the folded bottom of the bag is fed against a bar g<10> and held there by a bell-crank lever G<3> actuated by a fixed cam g<1> which releases the lever when the rear end of the bag is brought between pairs of co-operating rollers G<6>, G<9> disposed outside the discs G', the roller G<9> having a recessed portion g<5> which permits passage of the bag. As the lever G<3> releases the bag, the wider part g<4> of the roller G<9> engages it and reverses its direction of motion, projecting its unfolded end into a cam-operated hook g<6> associated with a roller G<10>. The unfolded end of the bag is now folded by mechanism similar to that used on the first end except that the gumming pad applies gum as shown in Fig. 3c and not as in Fig. 2a to leave a filling valve in the completed bag.
