The method involves connecting an earlier warning phase for activating a monitoring phase upstream to the monitoring phase. Infrared radiation emitted by missiles (17a, 17b) during ignition of a start motor is sensed in the earlier warning phase. The warning phase is activated when detection possibilities are fixed within short imminence distances in an adjacent environment of an object (11). Infrared-earlier warning sensors (12) are associated to determined azimuth sectors (15) around the object, where the sensors are not detected by erectors (16) in a ready position. An independent claim is also included for a device for protecting objects against an approaching missile by a defense grenade.
