710,059. Control of D.C. motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 25, 1952 [Sept. 25, 1951], No. 24060/52. Class 38(3) The pair of traction motors 5, 6, are supplied in parallel with the pair of motors 7, 8, from an engine-driven generator 1, and the motors of each pair are adapted to be connected together either in series or in parallel. A transfer relay 33 for automatically controlling the transition from the series to the parallel connection of the motors has a coil 35 energized in accordance with the voltage of the generator and an opposing coil 37 responsive to the generator current. A bias coil 41 supplied from battery 42 and aiding the voltage-responsive coil is added to the relay which thereby operates at only one pre-determined combination of generator voltage and current within the working range of the generator. The coils 35, 41, have regulating rheostats 36, 43, and the drop-out characteristic of the relay is adjusted by means of an adjusting screw on its armature. |
