Class 6 (3) In a harvesting machine wherein a harvesting device is driven from a tractor power shaft and a material handling device is driven from an auxiliary engine, means are provided for coupling the tractor power shaft to the material handling device to assist in driving the device when the auxiliary engine slows down due to overload. As shown applied to a machine for chopping hay and corn stalks to produce ensilage, the machine comprises a harvesting device A for cutting and elevating corn stalks and the like into a cutter B comprising cutter blades which serve as fan blades to convey the chopped material to a trailer. The harvesting device is driven from the power shaft 21 of a tractor T by means of bevel gearing 16 and a drive shaft 15 connected to the power shaft by means of unversal joints 22, 22a and a torque shaft 23. The cutter blades are mounted on a shaft 27 which is driven from an engine EB by means of a belt drive 31. The shaft 27 is connected to a shaft 38 by means of an over-running clutch 33 the shaft 38 being in driving connection with the shaft 15. If the speed of rotation of shaft 27 falls below that of the shaft 38 the clutch is engaged to enable the cutter B to be driven by the power shaft 21. In a modification shaft 38 is omitted and shaft 17 is connected to the clutch 38.
