A method for improving the spreading properties of fatty alcohol containing cosmetic ingredients comprises providing a fatty alcohol containing starting material and adding an effective amount of an acylating source. In particular, the acylating source is one of R1C=OOC=OR1 and R1C=OR2, where R1 is an alkyl substituent of the acyl group having between I and 5 carbons and R2 is an organic or inorganic electron withdrawing group. An acylated product that demonstrates increased spreading properties as compared with the spreading properties of the starting material prior to acylation is obtained. The acylated product may be compounded in at least one of a cream, a lotion, a liquid foundation, massage oil, a pressed cosmetic product, an eye shadow, a blush, a powder, a semi-solid and a solid foundation, a molded cosmetic product, a lipstick, a lip balm, an eyeliner, a mascara, a hair care product, a conditioner, a relaxer, and a hair dye.
