The method involves detecting whether seats of a row of a vehicle are occupied, and detecting lateral shock on the vehicle and an impacted side of the vehicle. A side inflatable cushion located at the impacted side of the vehicle is fired in a time lower than a specific value (t1). The firing of the side inflatable cushion is realized in a time higher than another value (t2) when the seats located on the impacted side are unoccupied. The latter value is proportional to the width of the vehicle.
