<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a method for operating a self-propelled device particularly in an operative technique further. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for operating the self-propelled device 1, particularly a cleaner such as a suction/cleaning robot to clean a floor 2, the device 1 at least automatically maps all region G (mapping) by measuring distances of the periphery, for instance. Particularly for a modified state profitable to the use of technical operation of the method, thereafter the device 1 automatically subdivides all the region G into partial regions (T<SB POS="POST">1</SB>-T<SB POS="POST">8</SB>). Further in the method for operating the self-propelled device 1, particularly the cleaner such as the suction/cleaning robot for cleaning the floor 2, in this case, the device 1 at least automatically maps all the region G by measuring the distances of the periphery, for instance.
