The device (1) has a battery sensor (10), and an electrical, optical and/or mechanical communication interface (20) e.g. LED or phototransistor, for communication between a connected battery (2) and the battery sensor. Cytochemistry of the battery is automatically detected by the communication interface, so that the battery sensor is automatically adapted to the detected cytochemistry. Algorithms are implemented in the battery sensor, where the battery sensor is automatically adapted to the detected cytochemistry by the algorithms.
