Disclosed is a water insoluble cutting oil base oil or a grinding oil base oil for metalworking containing a fatty acid polyoxyalkylene alkyl ether represented by formula (I-A) below, wherein the hydroxyl value of said fatty acid polyoxyalkylene alkyl ether is 2.0 mgKOH/g or less. R1-CO-(OA)n-OR3 (I-A) (in formula (I-A), R1 is a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated monovalent hydrocarbon group of from 15 to 21 carbon atoms; R3 is a linear, branched or cyclic monovalent hydrocarbon group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms.
