A high speed video cable (102. j) carries signals according to the High - Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) or DisplayPort standards, and includes a raw (108. j) cable and a boost device (118). The raw cable (108. j) includes coaxial lines or Shielded Twisted Pairs (STPs) of a characteristic cable impedance lower than the impedance implied in the standards. The correct impedance is observed at the sending end by series resistors mounted in the cable connector (110). The resultant loss of signal is made up with the boost device (118) at the other end of the cable. Alternatively, STPs or coaxial lines may carry signals on either shielded wires or shields to the boost device (118) where common mode noise induced by the signals on the shields is removed. Auxiliary signals including power are carried on ungrounded shields. As a result, a reduction in the number of wires in the cable is achieved, leading to a thinner, lighter, and less costly cable. The use of a uniform technology, either STP or coax, also permits simpler and lower cost production and assembly of the cable.
