<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tough steel for a mold for molding plastic where grain boundary carbide is smaller than conventional steel for a mold for molding plastic. <P>SOLUTION: This steel for the mold is used for molding plastic, and contains, by mass%, 0.05-0.2% of C, 0.3-2.0% of Si, 0.5-2.5% of Mn, 0.5-2.0% of Cu, 2.0-4.0% of Ni, 0.5-3.0% of Cr, 0.01-2.0% of Mo, 0.5-2.0% of Al, 0.030% or less of S, 0.015% or less of N, and 0.01% or less of O. The value of F(C, Si, Mn, Ni, Cr, Mo, Cu)=0.5C+0.7Si+5.1Mn+0.4Ni+2.2Cr+3Mo+0.4Cu establishes F≥12.
