<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet conveying device that can quickly detect a sheet side edge position, and to provide an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The sheet conveyance device includes a side end detection sensor unit 30 for detecting the side end position of a sheet P passing a sheet conveyance path, and a reference plate 16a serving as a reference when detecting the side end position of the sheet P. The side end detection unit is configured by a light emitting unit 35 arranged in the widthwise direction, and a light receiving unit 36 provided opposite to the light emitting unit 35 across the sheet conveyance path.
