<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce useful products, such as fuels, by processing biomass (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, and municipal waste biomass). <P>SOLUTION: A system 100 includes: a feed preparation subsystem 110 which receives biomass feedstock in its raw form, such as cellulosic and/or lignocellulosic materials, physically prepares the biomass for use as feedstock by downstream processes, and stores it; a pretreatment subsystem 114 which prepares the feedstock for use in primary production processes by reducing the average molecular weight and crystallinity of the feedstock; a primary process subsystem 118 which produces useful products (e.g., ethanol, other alcohols, pharmaceuticals, and/or food products); and a post-processing subsystem 122. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
