<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bleaching aid and a method for bleaching pulp which are capable of well bleaching both of a chemical pulp and a mechanical pulp under an alkali condition of pH 11 or higher in a bleaching treatment of pulp using hydrogen peroxide. <P>SOLUTION: A bleaching aid comprises a component (a): a polymer compound having a constitutional unit represented by the following general formula (I) and a component (b): a copper compound, and is used in a bleaching treatment of pulp such that the mass of the component (a) is 5 to 1000 mass ppm based on the dry mass of the pulp, the mass of the copper is 0.12 to 30 mass ppm based on the dry mass of the pulp, and the mass ratio of the component (a)/the copper is 4 to 800.
