Provided is an apparatus for controlling an internal combustion engine, which can ensure a required addition period more sufficiently for fuel that is added by means of a fuel addition valve, without being affected by the running state of the internal combustion engine. A fuel addition valve (24) is provided which is disposed in an exhaust port (22) and can add fuel to an exhaust passage (18). An exhaust variable valve mechanism (50) is provided which can vary the operation angle of an exhaust valve (48). Fuel is added using the fuel addition valve (24) in synchronization with the opening of the exhaust valve (48) which is provided in a cylinder where the fuel addition valve (24) is disposed. A required addition period for fuel is obtained using the fuel addition valve (24). The operation angle of the exhaust valve (48) is adjusted in accordance with the required addition period by using the exhaust variable valve mechanism (50).
