<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a range detecting device for determining an excessive moving failure in which a movable part moves beyond a normal movable range. <P>SOLUTION: In the range detecting device 30 of an automatic transmission, operating force according to the section of ranges acts on a coupling pin 52, and the slider 51 as an movable part advances in a "+X" direction or the retracts in a "-X" direction along the housing 31 in the normal movable range Zn. The switch 70 constituted of four hall elements H1 to H4 and four magnets M1 to M4 outputs the on/off pattern constituted by combining on/off signals according to the moving position of the slider 51. The slider 51 goes into an advancing inhibiting area Zf by the biasing force of the spring 49 in the case the connecting pin 52 breaks. In this case, the switch 70 outputs an on/off pattern different from the on/off pattern when the slider 51 is the normal movable area Zn.
