<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of the prior art in that when a writing lead rotates by writing pressure, a chuck body for gripping or releasing the writing lead and a chuck ring for opening or closing the chuck body do not rotate together to cause friction force between the chuck body and the chuck ring, resulting occurrence of flaws at their contact part to decrease the lead gripping force of the chuck body or resulting inadequate rotation of each member to bring about a possibility that the chuck body does not rotate. <P>SOLUTION: The mechanical pencil has a mechanical pencil unit, which includes a chuck body for gripping or releasing the writing lead, arranged in a shaft tube. The mechanical pencil unit retracts by the retracting action of the writing lead gripped by the chuck body, and a rotating means for rotating the mechanical pencil unit by the retracting action is disposed in the shaft tube.
