<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chair that facilitates to balance the softness of a seating surface and the firmness and rigidity of the whole backrest so as to enhance the degree of design freedom. <P>SOLUTION: A backrest 11 includes: a resin-made back shell 205 having openings and supported to a backrest support body 9; a plate-like back support member 209 arranged oppositely to the rear surface of the back shell 205 via a vertically or laterally opened space 245.
