An electric heating type exhaust gas purification device disposed in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine is configured in such a manner that condensed water is not retained in the vicinities of electrode terminals. An exhaust gas purification device for an internal combustion engine is provided with: a catalyst carrier provided with electrodes; a case for containing the catalyst carrier; a mat member disposed between the catalyst carrier and the case; space sections leading from the catalyst carrier to the case, penetrating through the mat member; and electrode terminals contained within the space sections and supplying electric power to the electrodes of the catalyst carrier. The exhaust gas purification device is also provided with a pressure supply section for supplying positive pressure to the space sections. The pressure supply section prevents exhaust gas and condensed water from entering the space sections through the mat member and the catalyst carrier.
