The reader (1) has illumination devices (4, 4', 4'') including radiating light sources (6, 6'') emitting light in two incompletely overlapping wavelength ranges between UV and near infrared lights (NIR). An electronic controller automatically successively adjusts a preset selection of combinations of recording optical paths, illumination optical paths and the wavelength ranges of the sources, and records associated images. An image evaluation computer obtains captured images from the controller via an interface and includes a unit for decoding recorded codes. An independent claim is also included for a method for using a device for reading codes in an examination region on a surface of a solar cell wafer.
