<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To more accurately track a subject. <P>SOLUTION: A luminance/color range setting unit 23 acquires luminances and colors of a predetermined area including the position of a subject imaged on an image and sets a predetermined luminance range including the luminances and a predetermined color range including the colors. A candidate area extraction unit 24 extracts image areas having luminances in the luminance range and colors in the color range from the next image as subject candidate areas and a subject detection unit 25 detects the subject from the subject candidate areas. Then, when the subject detection unit 25 failed in the detection of the subject, an extension width determination unit 27 determines an extension width for extending the luminance range, and the luminance/color range setting unit 23 updates the luminance range by extending the luminance range with the determined extension width.
