In a machine for assembling boxes, the bottoms pass beneath a device for applying paste thereto. A piston 45, engaging the narrower upper portion of a paste cylinder 43 descends and allows the cylinder 43 to rest in the bottom A of the box, the piston continuing its movement to express paste through side apertures 44 into the bottom. The ascent of the piston causes paste to flow past it until it raises the cylinder 43 clear of the box bottom.
