Uses of a device for varying the pH of a solution

The device (22) has a housing (24) that is in contact with solvent through a housing wall (26), where the wall is permissive to the solvent and a substance e.g. L-glucose. The housing contains enzymes e.g. L-fucose enzymes, for converting the substance in order to provide hydrogen or hydroxyl ions. The housing wall is non permissive to the enzymes. The housing is formed by a bundle of hollow fibers. Junction rings (28, 36) maintain two ends of the bundle of fibers, respectively. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a motor comprising an actuator (2) a substance purification system comprising a PH changing device (3) a cell comprising the pH changing device.
