Optical compensation films (9,10) are disclosed for a homogeneously aligned transmissive liquid crystal display, which is bright and has a high contrast.
The compensation films improve the viewing angle dependency of the contrast, colour, and gray-scale inversion properties of the display. Specifically, large fluctuations in display characteristics due to parameter variations in each component film are reduced while achieving a smaller overall compensation film thickness and improved reliability (fewer films).
Two retarder layers (first and second optically anisotropic layers (9,10) are arranged above the liquid crystal cell (6). The homogeneously aligned liquid crystal layer (5) has substantially zero twist [0,5]°. The film arrangement is (from the viewer's side): - polariser (7) - second optically anisotropic layer (10) - first optically anisotropic layer (9) - LC cell (6)- polariser (8) - backlight (11).
The first optically anisotropic layer (9) is formed from liquid crystal and has a fixed nematic hybrid orientation structure, with a retardation R in the range 50-l40nm; The second optically anisotropic layer (10) exhibits a retardation R in the range 80-180nm. The retardation values were measured at a wavelength of 550nm.
|
